Dogs available (CARA) (6)

CARA foster carers rescue suitable dogs, cats and other small pets from the pound and care for them in a safe and stable home environment. During this time, the animals are microchipped, desexed, vaccinated, treated and checked by a veterinarian in preparation for adoption.
Caring for the animals at home enables foster carers to become familiar with their traits, personalities and requirements. This in turn means that carers can assist prospective owner to make an informed decision about adopting the right pet for their lifestyle.

  • Description Life. That's what it's all about for Leroy... his enthusiasm is contagious and his warm, open personality means he wins friends wherever he goes! Leroy is a young dog with a stunning, athletic physique and shiny, healthy coat which requires minimum attention. Not surprisingly, given his breed mix, he is one smart cookie - having already learnt to sit, wait, shake hands, fetch (and return) his ball and walk nicely on the lead. He enjoys socialising with other dogs and is most comfortable with those smaller than himself. Leroy seems genial towards cats and would be best suited to a home without small children given his boisterous tendencies. He appears fully housetrained, sleeps quietly through the night and rides quite happily in the car. He loves people and thrives on interaction with his 'pack' - happy just to lie near you in the garden while you potter or join you for an adventure on one of Canberra's many dog-friendly walking trails. With his 'slouch hat' ears and goofy grin, this sweet fellow is a true Aussie Dog with all the honest geniality that so many of them are known for. Leroy will thrive at dog training classes and will make his new owners very proud as he truly wants to please. Having been diagnosed with moderate hip-dysplasia, Leroy has been thoroughly assessed by a Small Animal Specialist Surgeon who has given him the ok to run, walk and play for many, many years to come. His favourite thing in the whole world is 'tennis' - he will catch and retrieve his ball for you for hours on end without fail. A truly loyal friend... who just wants a special place of his own to call home and a special person to love him and be loved by him in return.

  • Description Jock is a fantastic little dog. He just loves everybody and everything and has a 'Hooray for everything! approach to life. Want to get your kids away from the tv or computer and into the back yard - Jock could be your secret weapon! He just loves play with the kids and my kids just love playing with him. Out in the yard with a soccer ball or a tennis ball or just having a romp around the yard with the kids is Jock's idea of a great time!! Games are his thing and he will play for hours whether it be with another dog or his family, but he will do best with another dog for company if you are away during the day. He is great at entertaining himself with a tennis ball and will throw it around for himself if no one is around to throw it for him. He has some basic training, and, most importantly, is house trained, but would do really well with more formal training as he just loves to impress the people in his life. With his positive attitude to life, and his waggy tail and permanent smile, Jock is an firm favourite in his foster home (who have had many dogs to base their decision on!) and will make a fantastic addition for a lucky family.

  • Description Callie is a very busy, affectionate and enthusiastic girl. She has lots of energy and intelligence, as you would expect from her working breed heritage so needs a home who want a dog to engage with and integrate into their lives. She does have high exercise needs, but a significant part of that can be met by things like play with your other dog during the day or a training session to use up some mental energy. Callie is learning to run alongside a bike and she is taking to it well. Her size, weight and responsiveness are such that it isn't hard to correct her course if necessary. She would also be a fantastic companion for a keen runner! Callie loves to run just about more than any foster I have had and can run like the wind, but her recall is fantastic and she always comes back when called...usually straight away! She is a funny girl who loves to run around the yard and chase rain drops and loves a romp with the kids. She can sometimes jump up when excited and occasionally challenges my 4 year old's resolve but is great with my 7 and 10 year old. Callie is on the less-confident end of the spectrum in new environments and takes a while to really trust her surroundings and the house rules. She is so desperate to please that she is likely to be a bit anxious when she moves into her new home, but as with coming into foster care, with a calm and consistent approach, she learns to trust and then becomes a much calmer and happier girl. As a typical Cattle dog she gets very attached to her people and will make someone an excellent, loyal companion. She desperately deserves a great home who will give her that security for life. Once she bonds, she reveals a shy sweetness that is tremendously appealing. From the first night in care Callie slept peacefully through. She has not chewed (and I don't think she has dug any holes) and she is house-trained. Callie will bark if left alone in the yard, so would not suit a situation where that is likely, but left in the yard with my other dogs she doesn't seem to feel the need to bark other than at the occasional bird that gets tantalisingly close. Being house-trained, she can also be left inside. She is a good size for travel, being about knee high and with a smallish frame. Her coat is easy-care and she is not at all fragile. She enjoys training and will quickly learn as much as you will teach her. She is food focused and desperately keen to please. If you have an active but bored dog who needs some company or simply want a devoted companion to join your active lifestyle, please give me a call to discuss.

  • Description This young boy arrived Saturday 4 Sept. At first impressions he is an energetic boy who loves to play with other dogs and people alike. He really wants to please you and is beautifully sensitive to correction. He could do with some basic training to learn not to jump up with excitement when he first sees you and we are working on that already. He knows sit and will bring a ball back and "sometimes" drop it for you - but not always! :) Pirate is extremely friendly with adults, kids and dogs, but I think he may be too playful for a cat. He loves to run and instantly gives a play-bow as soon as he sees another dog. Although he looks foward to his food, he is not an overeater, prefering to take his time with his meal. He will take affection over food when given a choice. As an active pup he wriggled a lot when I gave him an all-over touch test, but was not at all worried about being touched anywhere - even when eating. He's a very affectionate and cuddly boy who still has a lot of puppy in him. He sits beautifully and melts into me for a cuddle or a scratch around the collar. Very sweet! So far he has not barked at all and slept peacefully through the night. Pirate has very soft, managable fur which should only require an occasional groom to keep it looking good. He is about knee height so he will most likely be a medium dog fully grown. He is not at all shy and just wants all the fun things in life. He took very quickly to a game of tug-o-war and likes to chase a ball. My large dog was running madly around and around the yard with him within minutes of his arrival. Pirate will be an excellent pet for a family with children. He will do well with a short daily walk and plenty of human attention. He will be desexed next week. More info to come as I get to know him. Better photos soon.

  • Description What a sweetheart! Bonnie is just so happy and wriggly, her tail never stops wagging! She adores people and will happily sit quietly in front of the heater while you watch TV at night. She also loves going for walks, playing with her toys and for drives in the car. She is a friendly, playful dog who would suit a home with older or no children as she might be too bouncy for little kids. Bonnie doesn't bark when you go out and is always happy to see you when you return. She would be prefer to be an only dog so she can be the apple of your eye, however she is sharing her foster home with another dog and a cat at present. Bonnie has learned to contain her excitement on the lead and will sit and lie down on command. If you think you can give Bonnie a loving kind home then please call and you can come and meet this sweetie.
