What is CARA?
CARA is a Canberra based non-profit Incorporation dedicated to saving the lives of pets listed for euthanasia at pounds within the Australian Capital Territory and New South Wales. The organisation is committed to working with ACT and NSW animal shelters to achieve minimum destruction rates through the responsible rehoming of companion animals and the promotion of animal desexing within the community.
CARA has been developed upon clear and ethical principles of governance. This ensures safe, simple and rewarding outcomes for the animals in care, their carers, adoptive owners, CARA members and supporters alike.
How does it work?
CARA foster carers rescue suitable pets from the pound and care for them in a safe and nurturing home environment. During this time, the animals are microchipped, desexed, vaccinated, treated and checked by a veterinarian in preparation for adoption.
Caring for the animals at home enables foster carers to become familiar with their traits, personalities and requirements. This in turn means that carers can assist prospective owner to make an informed decision about adopting the right pet for their lifestyle.
Pets available for adoption are listed on the CARA website with a description, photographs and sometimes a short video. Prospective adopters can browse the listings and contact the foster carer of any animal they would like to know more about.
With every successful adoption a new space is made available in foster care and therefore another life can be saved. By adopting a pet from CARA, you are directly responsible for making this happen.
